Mahboba’s Promise
Australian Projects
For several years now, Mahboba’s Promise has developed programs in Australia to address the issues faced by migrant and refugee communities, focusing particularly on children and women.
Our programs aim at building bridges between the Australian and Afghanistan community. We use a family-centric approach that builds on the strengths of Afghan families and culture to develop their sense of inclusion and belonging the the broader Australian community.
Current Projects
Migrant Integrated Learning Support Program
Funded by Ryde Council, Migrant Integrated Learning Support (MILS) Program is an education support and self confidence building initiative that aims to assist disadvantaged Afghani children in the Ryde LGA. The program specifically targets disadvantaged school children with limited English skills living in Ryde. It aims to reduce the linguistic and cultural barriers to education these young people face by improving their self-confidence through educational tutorial support and active social activities to enhance their educational experience within an engaging and participatory environment. The program consists of 2 components: to establish educational support through the provision of tutorial seminars for disadvantaged students, and to participate in sports and dance activities to build students’ self-confidence in developing social relationships and promote active lifestyles. This is run every Thursday and Saturday by qualified professionals at the Eastwood Town Hall.
Bibi's House
Bibi’s House is a social support and capacity building program assisting isolated refugee and migrant women from Afghan and other culturally and linguistically diverse communities living in Cumberland Area. The dual functions of Bibi’s House are to provide a safe space for these women to develop friendships for mutual support as they navigate their own settlement experience in Australia, and to educate and empower the women through informational and participatory workshops to develop their skills, capacities and confidence.
Bibi’s House specifically seeks to increase the rates of participation in Australian community life in refugee women from Afghan and other culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.
Upcoming Projects
CALD To Health
The CALD to Health (CTH) program is a family-centred health and social support initiative to assist disadvantaged women from culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) backgrounds living in the Cumberland LGA. This program involves participatory, educational and empowering workshops in combination to Yoga classes to address the physical and mental health needs of these diverse women.
This provides opportunities for women and girls to engage in social, recreational and physical activities while facilitating a network of social support and cohesion. This program will increase access to physical and mental health and wellness services, and strengthen community capacity through interconnectedness and social engagement.
Marsfield Mothers Support Network
The Marsfield mothers from culturally diverse backgrounds. Significant research has found that single mothers, particularly those from CALD communities, face isolation and are at high risk of economic disadvantage. The Marsfield Mothers’ Support Network addresses this issue through direct financial, emotional and mental health support. We will be holding empowering, participatory, and family-orientated workshops on the following areas:
Financial counselling and advice workshop, mental health literacy and self care, an interactive forum focused on the lived experience of migrants in Australia and a multicultural dinner in celebration of diversity!
