Mahboba’s Promise

Australian Projects

For several years now, Mahboba’s Promise has developed programs in Australia to address the issues faced by migrant and refugee communities, focusing particularly on children and women.

Our programs aim at building bridges between the Australian and Afghanistan community. We use a family-centric approach that builds on the strengths of Afghan families and culture to develop their sense of inclusion and belonging the the broader Australian community.

Projects Overview

Hope House Youth Program

Hope House Youth Program is target at 50 Afghan children between the ages of 12 and 18 residing in Sydney. Mahboba’s Promise has identified swimming ability as an issue in the Afghan community, where many newly arrived Afghans lack basic swim safety skills. This means many are unable to engage in typically Australian activities such as swimming at the beach. The Youth Program addresses this issue through providing swimming, gym lessons and a weekend retreat for participants.

The aim of this project is to use music to support the integration of parents and their young children (0-5 years old) from refugee families in the Afghan community into their new Australian community. The facilitator for this project is a Registered Music Therapist. Music therapy within this context is the use of creative music-making in a group environment to address the participants social, emotional and developmental goals. The participants have the opportunity to interact with other children and parents in a positive, supportive, non-judgmental environment; assisting them in social and cultural integration.

Mahboba's Promise Community Launch

Mahboba’s Promise Launch will be held on Saturday the 30th of March. The event will introduce our organisation to the community and foster lasting relationships with residents and organisations in Ryde, as well as showcase Afghan culture in a fun and exciting way. The launch will involve informative presentations of our work, showcase the Old Eastwood Town Hall as a community hub, as well as provide information regarding how residents can utilise The Old ETH. There will be food stalls, performances of Afghan music, and exhibits displaying Afghan cultural artefacts, along with stalls providing fun activities such as henna. The local community will also be involved through including dance and music performances by children from local schools.

CareerWise Youth Program

CareerWise Youth Program is an employment and education support program that aims to assist disadvantaged Afghan youth in the Cumberland area. The program specifically targets disadvantaged school leavers and job seekers (17-24) with limited English skills living in Guildford, where there is a lack of employment support programs. It aims to reduce the linguistic and cultural barriers to education and employment these young people face, and provide them with the knowledge and skills needed to find work and further their education.
