2025 Earthquake Appeal
With Afghanistan already in the midst of humanitarian crisis, help us provide immediate relief to affected families and children.
Urgent:
A new aftershock on 4 September added further destruction: more homes destroyed, roads again blocked, complicating relief efforts, but only a portion of affected villages have been reached. They need your urgent support.
What is Happening Right Now?
On 31 August 2025, a powerful 6.0-magnitude earthquake struck eastern Afghanistan—primarily impacting Kunar Province, with significant effects in neighbouring Nangarhar, Laghman, Nuristan, and Panjshir.
The quake’s epicentre was in Nurgal District, deeply affecting communities with nearly all homes constructed from vulnerable materials like mud-bricks and stone.
Tragically, the disaster claimed the lives of over 2,200 people and injured thousands more—including more than 4,000 individuals—while destroying upwards of 8,000 homes. In some areas, nearly 98% of buildings were entirely destroyed.
The immediate aftermath has been grim: landslides and aftershocks continue to hamper rescue operations, and access to remote mountain villages remains limited. Many families—already vulnerable—are now displaced and facing critical shortages of food, clean water and basic necessities.
Our Response
Drawing on our experience providing life-saving relief during the Herat earthquake in 2023, we are focusing on the children — those whose sense of safety, home, and wellbeing has been shaken the most. Many families have reached out to us for help during this devastating time.
We are giving out care packs to the children filled with school supplies, colouring books, snacks, and toys — small but vital tools to help them feel safe, cared for and to restore a sense of hope and normalcy. Our team will also be providing psychosocial support (such as colouring) to help facilitate this.
Families will receive freshly cooked meals from us, to provide them with comfort and nourishment.
