Our Vision for the Future
Our projects over the last 12 years have been very successful; we have assisted over 12,000 widows, orphans. Our model; Hope House orphanage and school, welfare and training projects for widows, linked to a permaculture production farm, is a proven success and it works! Due to the ever increasing demand for our services we have taken an organizational decision to replicate our successful model in partnership with communities around Afghanistan. The community partnership issue is critical to our success; it allows the services we provide to be offered to an increased number of individuals, quickly, efficiently and cost effectively.
Mahboba’s Promise already has good relationships with communities in both semi urban and rural areas that posses valuable land resources. From our 12 years experience running aid projects in Afghanistan we can now see that it would be highly beneficial for Mahboba’s Promise and these struggling communities to enter into development partnership arrangements.
Our plan is for Mahboba’s Promise to offer training and resources using the principles and ethics of permaculture to increase sustainable food production and build communities that are able to withstand the effects of regional insecurity. The reward will be the creation of social and economic sustainability for all and a supportive welcoming community for the widows and children in the care of Mahboba’s Promise, giving them not just hope but meaning to their lives, with knowledge and dignity.
The permaculture food production will keep everyone in the village, including the orphans fed and watered, with the widows involved in added value food processing to generate income for themselves and the community. Food will again become the enabler of culture to live and thrive once more.
Mahboba’s Promise will also construct in each community a residential school on a small block of community land. Both the orphans of Mahboba’s Promise and the children from the community can attend classes together.
This development partnership relationship also has positive implications in any future deterioration of the security situation, as the community will offer inherent ‘protection’ to Mahboba’s Promise infrastructure and beneficiaries as the community will exhibit a large degree of ownership of the projects that are taking place on their land. This development partnership model represents positive human interaction amidst the violence and tragedy in Afghanistan, and a safe and secure learning environment for children to begin their development journey.
In order to realize this vision Mahboba’s Promise is expanding its funding base to include institutional and government donors to finance infrastructure and permaculture developments, to complement the already strong and vibrant private and corporate donor base that directly funds welfare and education projects and sponsors widows and orphans.
We hope you find our vision for continuing to assist the most vulnerable members of Afghanistan’s society as compelling as we do. Twelve years of success has urged us to do more for widows and orphans and ensure that we develop a program that is stable and will last for the long term. It is indeed a long term growing and sustainable solution to a long term growing problem.
